About the Society

The Indian Society of Soil Salinity and Water Quality (ISSSWQ), founded on 6th August 2008 at Karnal under the Societies Registration Act XXI, 1860 (Registration No. ROS-088) for the advancement of research and development in soil salinity and water quality, aims at providing a forum for scientists, engineers, research workers, students and different stakeholders on the emerging scientific themes for exchange of ideas and knowledge. It acts as a catalytic link among research institutions, development organizations, industries and farmers. Since its inception, the society organizes national and international seminars, conferences and symposia at a regular interval in collaboration with leading organizations on different aspects relevant to soil salinity and water quality research both fundamental and applied.

Mandate

  • To provide a forum for research workers, academia and industries for purposeful exchange of ideas and knowledge related to soil salinity and water quality while managing natural resources efficiently,
  • To facilitate the generation of high-quality geospatial database on natural resources with aim to develop reclamation and management strategies mainly of salt-affected soils and poor quality water resources,
  • To disseminate technologies and knowledge for reclamation and management of salt affected soil and poor-quality water resources, stress tolerance mechanisms in plants, saline agriculture and agroforestry systems, domestication and improvement of submergence and salt tolerance in crops,
  • To promote human resource development and stakeholders’ capacity building in the areas of assessment, reclamation and management of soil salinity and water quality, and natural resources, and
  • To facilitate the science-based policy planning processes for upliftment of farming communities living in different saline environments especially in the scenario of climate change.

Programmes

To achieve the above mandate/objectives, the Society has decided:

  • To publish a biannual research journal, bulletins, books and periodicals from time to time,
  • To organize seminars/conferences/ symposia/workshops, popular lectures, excursions, exhibitions, and agri-tourism,
  • To initiate/develop Regional Chapters of the Society in different parts of the country,
  • To undertake consultancy and training programmes in the relevant fields and collaborate, wherever necessary, with other government and voluntary agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs),
  • To prepare the state-of-the-art reports on degradation of land and water resources
  • To develop mechanisms for strengthening of the Society so that it serves the farming community for upliftment of their socio-economic conditions in most effective manner.

Objectives of the society

  • To facilitate in survey of natural resources of India with the aim to generate database and suggest preventive and reclamation strategies.
  • To transfer knowledge and technologies related to soil salinity and water quality.
  • Human resource development and capacity building of stakeholders in the area of soil salinity, water quality and natural resource management.
  • To facilitate policy planning processes for the civil communities.
